Google to change its name to Topeka?

Hmmm… judging from the title itself, I am smelling another funny joke around here. :D

Well, anyways,  according to the Official Google Blog (googleblog.blogspot.com), Google is changing its name from “Google” to “Topeka“. Topeka by the way is a place in Kansas, United States. It just goes the same that, just recently, the mayor of Topeka has changed it’s name from “Topeka” to “Google“.(here’s the story by the way; http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TECH/03/02/google.kansas.topeka/index.html)

How did this happened?

Bill Bunten, mayor of Topeka, unofficially announced the change which lasted the whole month of March. It seems like its an effort from Bunten’s administration to get a spot in Google’s “Fiber for communities“, where Google will install new internet connections on unannounced locations in the US, giving them internet speeds 100 times faster than those elsewhere, with data transfer faster than 1 Gigabit per second. (This program by Google is, I think, a legit one, in contrast with Google’s changed name :D )

And now April 1, Google is following the change by (sort-of) honoring Topeka’s change of name. Google is also changing its name to Topeka. Google even took it too far by reminding people on how to “properly” use the word “Topeka” instead of “Google” when mentioning it in a conversation. Check the picture below.google topeka

Now this is really weird. I am expecting this to be another April Fools’ joke from Google for the year 2010. haha :D
