Jack Black returns to the big screen, and this time he presents himself as the main character of a “refreshed” children’s story “Gulliver’s Travels“.

Yeah I know this movie was out in the cinemas weeks ago, but cut me some slack – I was too busy last week

and had only the time today to write a review about this movie.

Anyway, the main reason I watched Gulliver’s Travels is because of Jack Black - that’s it. I’m a big fan of Jack Black and have always been anticipating his new lineups of movies. Ever since I watched his movie, “School of Rock“, I was hooked.

And to my relief, “Gulliver’s Travelsdelivered what I was expecting it to deliver.

So okay, I will be reviewing Gulliver’s Travels as a “moviegoer” and not as an “expert movie reviewer”. So if you intend to flame me about my review, then you have to go and watch Gulliver’s Travels, and make your own movie review. :D

First up is the story. The story is nothing that special really. It’s like a “modern adaptation” of the classic Gulliver’s Travels story we have grown to love.

Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) plays as the “mail man” in New York City newspaper. Gulliver decided to talk to journalist Darcy Silverman (Amanda Peet) and convinces her that he can write about his (false) “travels”. Darcy was impressed and got Lemuel to an assignment where he was ordered to go to Bermuda Triangle and write about the legends of missing ships around there.

While at sea, Lemuel’s boat got swallowed into a storm. Lemuel was knocked unconscious and awoken at a strange place called Lilliput. From that point on, Lemuel’s adventure begins.

What really caught me off guard though was that the movie was kind of ..uhm, “hollow”. It wasn’t that deep to even make a lasting impression in your mind after the movie ends. The movie flow was pretty straightforward, though – too straightforward that the main events of the story is thrown at you at quick succession. At one time I see Jack Black hitting it with the girl and the next he’s on Lilliput doing his usual antics with the little guys.

Comedy-wise, I found Jack Black “mild” this time. Some of his antics were reminiscent of his character in “School of Rock” – he even had a guitar game scene which was of course a big part in School of Rock (he’s a guitar player there). I wasn’t laughing that hard when I was watching this movie, and not too many times too. I have to admit that I felt that Jack Black was “lacking” in his punchlines, but nevertheless, that didn’t totally ruin the whole movie.

As a whole, Gulliver’s Travels is a nice movie to pass time. It’s not something mind boggling but if you just want to waste a couple of good hours (in a good way), go with Gulliver’s Travels. As for me, Jack Black is enough reason to watch this movie. :D
